Hi, how’s life in Brazil? Do you count how many of tape/cd/vinyl that ROT has released til today?
After 6 years, we can say that we are finally healing… These were years that seemed to never end, many people died, lost their jobs, housing, the increase of violence, etc. I'm glad things are looking a bit better now.
I think it's impossible to tell this, I'm sorry. Knowing exactly how many tapes out there seems impossible…
 

Any releases that your band had been ripped off (or not satisfy with the deal) by the label/band?
EP Split w/ Chikara, this release made us very upset, as the deal would only be on cassette. Very sad about that.
 

After decades of grinding, you guys still active with all the music releases, merchs etc, what motivates you guys to keep struggling in this scene?
The anger, the hatred we feel for this inhuman, cowardly and racist System, our music is a way of demonstrating our dissatisfaction with the Neoliberalism that massacres people every day.
 

How Covid-19 (corona) affected ROT’s activities? Do you believe in those vaccine thinggie? If you don’t mind, please share with us what happen to Alex..
Alex died because the vaccine was not applied on him. Not just him,  more than 700,000 Brazilians were murdered because of poor medical care, the government itself took charge of boycotting vaccines. Yes, I believe in vaccines and science.
 

As the band matured by time, do you guys still OK to release a rehearsal-recorded-with-walkman thing, especially for small label? Or you guys have certain standard of audio quality in releasing?
…I don't know if the right word would be "quality standard", but tous, a recording has to pack some punch, weight, and be reasonably audible. We are not going to release anything just because “it was Rot that did it”, never. There are people who expect us to do something that touches the minds and hearts and we care about that above all.
 

Ok that gonna be the end of this interview, any last word to the reader? Or maybe to promote your latest upcoming release?
Thank you very much for the space given to the band! We are very happy and writing at this moment, in the middle of 2023 we will have an unprecedented release and in the beginning of 2024 there's more coming, thank you and keep the underground alive!!!

INTERVIEW WITH APPÄRATUS

How’s the preparation of the new EP “From..To The Land of The Dead”? All recording completed? Give us a little update of how many tracks, who produced it, which label will press it, cover work by whom etc etc..

Jerry – It was a bit difficult because we’re now live far away from each other. Luckily, I bought an electric kit and this really helps with the writing process.

All of the drum recordings are done. Only guitars, bass, and vocals left. There’s gonna be 6 total tracks for the new EP. Mr. Tajul Andez (Route33 Studio) will do the mixing for the new 7”.


Wolfskin - So far real good,mate! By the time im answering my part...i reckoned all the strings arrangements are done as well..just gonna continue tomorrow as our new permanent bass player - Bopix is coming down to KTN & finish all his bassliness.. and hopefully im gonna lay all vocals as well! everything just super brutal at this point,haha.. we are totally back on the fast brutal short  MANGEL trips!

There'll be 5 new original trax + a cover version of classic Bombanfall's " Mot en Stralande Framtid " we were thinkin..' ... either doin it extra brutal..or just dont fckin do it! ' aaha u know what i means? its like u playin god! hahaa

About the label for this Ep.. we will announce it real soon!

Yeah.. Tajul Andez works best for us...and he will continue his wizard-hood mixing APPÄRATUS trax! This time we gonna try out some mastering works with this one studio in Italy...finger crossed!

Cover arts? We lookin fwd to work with this one local punk artist! Thats all i can say for  now! hope it can carry the music!

And the split 12” with which band? Also some details needed if possible. Any other recordings planned for 2023 beside these two (ep/split 12")?

Jerry – So far for this year, we will only do a 7” EP, a 12” Split LP with EXTREME CRUDE DISORDER, and a 7” Split with OVERCHARGE. It’s gonna be a busy year for us that’s for sure.


Wolfskin - That split 7" wit OVERCHARGE is freakin interesting! 2013-2023 ... we first met and play together in Milan 10 years ago.. and when they write me for a split... didn't take us long to decide! its like great way to celebrate 10 years of friendship in one  hell of fckin record! 3 brand new traxs for this one!

Yeah the split 12".... it will be out under our long time label/friend.. Rawmantic Disaster ( Berlin )

To support the new release, so far how many festivals/shows are already booked for Apparatus?

Wolfskin - We are scheduled to play Day 2 at FRAGILE MOUNTAIN  PUNK FESTIVAL in Goteborg Sweden.. n we still waiting for confirmation from this other festival :) But yeah,there's also another 18 dates & cities around Europe to be burn! and most of the shows & bookings already CONFIRMED! at same time..we felt bad gotta turn down few festival offers...coz most of those totally out of routes.Pretty nerve-wrecking,mate... as this is gonna be our first self-booking DIY tour abroad! Wish us best of luck,will ya!

We'll officially announce the tour by Feb end!



Besides staying far from each other, what else are the difficulties the band facing right now?

Jerry – Obviously, it’s money hahaha!! Everything is very expensive these days. Studio recording price are also increasing. I live in Sabah and the flight to the peninsular are also very expensive. I have to be very discipline in my financial planning. Have to save A LOT of money for our upcoming tour.

Wolfskin - Time... Money...we are not kinda band that just can see eacn other for some drinks or hangouts...at anytime we wish.. as many knew,Me & Bopix livin in Peninsular.. and Jerry Kid staying far away in the North Borneo.. so EVERY COMMUNICATIONS...PLANNINGS..SELF-REHEARSE..HOMEWORKS....and POSITIVE ENERGIES are absolut crucial to us...and yeah so far im freakin happy.. Everybody seems always highly motivated and crazy fun stuffs always happening...

So most of time we dont really feel the 'hardship' everytime we having new projects...recordings,gigs..tours..as we putting high values on comunication & plannings & self prctice as i explain above.. then we can beat all these distance...lack of practicing as a whole...working schedules.. bla bla bla n bla bla bla..



To some, touring might be very tough especially if it took weeks or months to stay together as a band. And to some it is just another fun day. For Apparatus itself, what is your view on touring? Have you guys ever fought/quarreled with each other during touring?  What is the advice you want to give to the band that wants to start touring?

Jerry – We love touring. It’s like a dream job. But we’re not gonna lie, sometimes we also fought and have disagreements but that’s the reality of touring. Most importantly you have to stay humble with your bandmates.


One of the most important advices that I can give is DON’T PUT YOUR EXPECTATION HIGH. Don’t expect 100 or 200 people come to your shows every night and don’t expect to get paid in every shows you played. Don’t expect people to buy all of your stuffs every shows. If you put your expectation too high, you will end up feeling burnt out and that’s really bad for touring. Remember to always stay humble and stay professional. No matter how small the show is, always give 100% every time you play.

Wolfskin - i dunno mate.. but for us.. touring always revealing many other aspects in band's life. Not just bout the music..and partying like a manics..hhhaa..and after more than 10 years playing in international circuits.. really thought us many precious things!

it doesnt really matter how good your bands are..or how much money you able to spend/allocate for every tours..BUT the sense of being such a super strong..super gel & tight friendship till the end! Yeahh like Jerry said... sometime we quarelled and being such moody... but Never tke/keep it hard and let the sour faces dragging the whole thang,mate :)

Its always great been to new countries,playing at new & old...popular & unknown venues...making new connections..or reunite with some old frenz around!

Best part...if u lucky.. maybe u can meet and hangout with your fav bands & people that u can call legends of your own! hhhaa.. meeting ANTI-CIMEX & plying with old members frm KAAOS for example... always surreal to us! hahha

My little advise ? keep the vibes positive and love your band mates & road crews ... care of / accepting each other and learn as much! Work as hard & play like there's no tomorrow! U gottta understand...enjoy things that u do together and letting go! ... keep making histories seems way much better other than glorifying your past hey day,ain't it? and take no fckin shortcuts!

I’ve just noticed you have shifted from strat to LP, heavier sound perhaps? Any last words to the readers? All the best to Apparatus and thank you.

No shifting here mate... I'm always a Strat believer...yea recently I was using my other guitar...'78 Japanese Yamaha SL380..fun to play also with that axe... but hardly can match my old Strat sounds live! hahha but yeah man... I bet u gonna seee the Strat actions again on the road soon! hha.. and im using both Stratocaster & that LP during "FROM.. TO THE LAND OF THE DEAD" recording as well! U should check em out soon!

INTERVIEW WITH JOGJA NOISE BOMBING (INDRA MENUS)

Hi Indra, how’s life after pandemic? If you still remember, can you tell the reader a little story about the first gig/show of Jogja Noise Bombing (JNB). And beside you, who else is behind this historical event?
Life is almost as back in normal before pandemic here I guess, also the government last month have lifting the ban of their useless program on restriction during pandemic known as PPKM Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat (imposition of restrictions on community activities – in English). Big festivals already happening, smaller gigs & touring bands still going.

I’m not good in remembering past event hahaha but I recall the seeds of JNB began to be planted between 2009-2010 by several noise acts who later became rosters of two Yogyakarta netlabels: Ear Alert Records (run by Hilman Fathoni) and Pati Rasa Records (run by Wedness Mandra). Initially it was only an exchange of ideas via SMS or hang out at coffee shop, which later developed into noise bombing activities on the streets and continued to organizing workshops, exhibitions and also the annual Jogja Noise Bombing festival. The first event known as Noise Bombing probably in January 2012 as i recall in this video:

 

The persons who did this in that video are Pandu CONTROL-Z , Yogi JURUMEYA, me as TO DIE, Wednes Mandra BANGKAI ANGSA, Hilman Fathoni DJ MO)))DARA, Adit ARPAPPEL and Akbar of MBAK MONA.


JNB 2023 will be held this coming/next week. Please tell us some rundown of the event or maybe anything/something special awaiting for the attendees?
To be clear, I’m not really involved in this year festival since we want to do regeneration. Before this, I was the curator & project manager of the festival but now I’m more like helping them from behind the scene. This year festival, the project manager is Rio of Coffee Faith.

Apart from seeing the progress of regeneration within the JNB community as the organiser, 2023 will also be the first festival to conduct an open call and performers will be chosen by figures outside JNB members. One of the reasons is to make the selection of the viewer from a different point of view. Wok The Rock (Yes No Wave) was chosen as the JNB Fest 2023 Open Call jury.

JNB itself is synonymous with street performance and it is considered an interesting innovation in the world of performance, so that the elements of street noise bombing (performing illegal noise shows in public spaces) are not completely eliminated from the festival elements, but are combined with the discussions that are always hot on several occasions for the couple of years now, namely decentralization and inclusiveness. So, it will feel more relevant if the festival is divided at various venues at almost the same time.

JNB Fest 2023 is being held for two days January 21-22 2023. The first day describes current issues regarding decentralization, that is the reason why the activities on that day are made into a parallel event and in collaboration with several collective groups in Jogja, namely Ruang Gulma Collective , Kombo, Lifepatch and Tempuran Ambient Spasial separately. Meanwhile, the pre-event held on January 20 was organized by Bast Cultura.

The second day of JNB Fest 2023 will continue to be held like a festival for the general public. The festival itself is synonymous with frenzy in one place, so the second day is still held as usual in one place, namely at the Location Social House.


Beside giving the noise unit a platform to perform, what else is the objective for the formation of JNB?
JNB was formed as a platform for noise music to introduce its existence to the general public. We want noise music in Indonesia to be recognized in the same sense as other underground music scenes. Whether the people like noise music in the end or not is a matter of personal taste.

From what originally came from bed rooms musicians or miRC chat rooms, it later became a music scene in real life where there are supporting structures (community, gig, record label, media, distribution) and networks between the noise acts. Apart from of course widening the network to different areas.

You are doing all of these because of love, but, so far what is the best achievement/recognition that JNB had/received?
If not because of love, we already stopped years ago :) Unlike noise musicians in the western world, we still didn’t get any funding from our government and that’s okay for us. Funny is that the other governments was supportive with us, like the Japan Foundation funded my research about Noise in south east Asia.

We got recognition from worldwide magazines and media such as The Wire, Noisey, Vice, BBC, Boiler Room TV etc. We got invitation to play in big festival in Europe also Indonesia.

But one of the best thing we ever received I think is when we got a formal invitation from Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta (one of the big festival in our city) in 2015 to play in a venue where we got kicked 2 years before because we do an ilegal noise bombing there.

I think that was one of the best achievement for JNB, to get a recognition from people who hate us in the beginning :)


Berisik is a compilation released by JNB, please tell the reader more about this compilation. How many volumes till today? Format release?  Special release? Or whatever is worth mentioning regarding Berisik.
The compilation first started as a way to document the noise scene at that particular moment then it serve to promote the noise acts that involved in the JNB. We usually trade it while we were doing tour to another city/country or as a gift, sometimes selling it to fund our event.

This ongoing project later was joined by a music producer, one of them is Uya Cipriyano, who have the idea to produce a high quality sound from noise music. We started doing a workshop then lead to recording process at Alldint studio.

Before this, everyone just send their home studio recording, the sound may vary and not as wanted to capture the sound. By the help of the producer, we record our sound in a proper studio and got a proper mixing mastering process. We want to give an alternatif view that noise can be properly produced.
I’m not keeping count on this as Arie of Mindbalsting was doing the documentation but I recall it’s already in volume 4. The format release is usually on digital format (via blog, archive etc) and physical (CD-r or cassette). I think the special release is the volume 3 when we start doing a collaboration with a music producer.

INTERVIEW WITH ROTTEN SOUND

Apocalypse will be released in March 2023, how’s the preparation from your camp to celebrate the release? Any tour planned?

Keijo: We have shows and tours planned around and after the release date, hopefully to be announced quite soon. Some festivals too.


What can your fans expect from Apocalypse? Based on "Sharing" that you released as promo, I must say it was a super tornado grind as the usual Rotten Sound should be. And also maybe you can tell us a brief info about this new recording like where it was recorded, who engineered it etc.

Keijo: Drums and vocals were recorded at Sound Supreme studios, guitars and bass at Nordic Audio Labs. Janne Saksa was the recording engineer. The album was mixed by Jesse Gander at Rain City Studios and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audio Siege studios. We are really happy with the result, sounds fast and aggressive.

Mika: Making a new record is always challenging, especially this is already our 8th full-length album. This album we planned to make it really aggressive. "Useless" parts have been removed from all the songs and they are really short songs now. Straight on your face.

Rotten Sound had been around for years, recorded a few albums, countless shows and sold lotsa merch. My question, if you are given the opportunity, what else do you want to achieve with Rotten Sound?

Keijo: We don't really have a 5 year plan, but obviously it would rule to tour all over after this album and with bunch of cool bands as always.

Mika: Gigs & seeing people is always great, you never get tired of it. Just play more gigs and get to new countries!

How’s the sale of your merch (tshirt, cap etc) compared to the album (CD, LP etc)?  Which one can help more to finance some of the band expenses?

Keijo: Merch sales is of course important to all touring bands now as it was also before. We do sell some recordings too, but more clothing. As for expenses, the shows are obviously also paying our bills and when we go out, the combination of shows & merch keeps things constructive to be able to pay bills at home when we return.

INTERVIEW WITH CON-DAMN THE CORRUPTOR

Con-Damn The Corruptor (CTC) planning for 2023? New recordings? Merch? Gigs?

Hi whats up guys benny writing here. So far we are going to having a performance on:
- noisefest 2023 at sandakan 5 FEBUARY
-corefest 2023 at kuching, sarawak 4 march
-istirahat 2023 at johor (TBC) JULLY

Thats all the show that we can list now and for the new recording, yes we are on the recording process now and we're going to relese some merch aswell
 

Seems like you guys are not having a stable line up for the band, does it in a way or another affect the activities of CTC? And who is actually the core/important person in CTC, without him/her then CTC will not sound as CTC?

Yeah people come and go and we keep recruiting a new line up again and again but it's okay since this band is a collective band. Everybody in CTC are the core for this band but honestly the main role for the sound of CTC is popoi (drummer) without him CTC sound will become verry different coz only popoi can make a drum sound that what i want which is the tribal beat. I already doing some audition for the drummer possition while popoi is not in the band before this but nobody can copy the popoi tribal beat. Besides popoi of course me myself as a vocalist and the captain for this band i'm the person who incharge this band for everything like practice, shows, merch, promotion etc. But honestly i prefer to call CTC as a FAMILY and the member for CTC now is:

Jurdin - guitar/bass
Basri - guitar/bass
Nick - guitar/bass/drum

We fight corruption every day, but there is no sign of it going to stop. As a band, what is your effort in combating corruption?

Corruption is everywhere and always have as long as the human with the greedy attitude and never satisfying of what they have. A corruptor is like a pig it doesn't matter of how many times that you feed them, they always hungry and keep asking a "food" more and more. I've seen this for so many time's (corruption) and it make me sick! We as a band, we will keep spreading the message about this asshole (the corruptors) as long as we alive.
 

Your song ``Story From Our Land", has this line of “Berdiri bergerak bersama-sama, Kita lawan penindasan”. What kind of oppression are people in Sabah in general still facing today? Tell us the reader about the reality and the truth that we might not even know.

The oppression from the authority especially the about the MA63 which is the agreement during the malaysia organization during 1963, the malaysia born from the alliance of malaya, sabah, and sarawak and there's a few agreement that they (kerajaan pusat) need to fullfill it but it never happens. besides the sabah and sarawak status are changed by them (kerajaan pusat) from COUNTRY to STATE. The ic project, it's really really sucks and it give a big impact of the community in sabah nowadays. So many if i want to wrote down here but nevermind it will be more good if we meet someday and we can chill drinking some coffe and i can tell you more.

 

Do you agree if I said that bands in our scene now are less political and more personal especially in the lyrical theme? Your view on this topic.

Well i feel the same actually but it's okay coz everybody have a right to expose they feel and everything from the music that they play.

INTERVIEW WITH DUM DUM TAK

 

Being a band that is leaning towards political awareness lyrics, how do you see the current political situation in Malaysia? Did you, and the band mates, cast your/their vote in the recent election?

Keyroll_Spanky: Salam hello. Sorry lambat jawab. Hal dunia mengawal diri aku (buto). Apa aku bakal jawab adalah dari aku sendiri. Bukan band. Sebab line up kitorang semua kepala yang berbeza.

Untuk current political situation agak susah nak jawab sebab masih awal. Walaupun yang sedia ada kita nampak geng buat lagu anti penyamun sudah pun bersama dengan penyamun untuk dapatkan majoriti dan geng kalah koyak minta bukti majoriti. Tapi untuk aku itu je dulu. Dan lagi 1 buat masa ini since PM baru naik economically currency pun elok sikit (sikit je lah). Tapi untuk aku itu pun kira benda yang positif. Buat masa ini harapan aku adalah harga barang dan minyak boleh turun lagi. Kalau kita kemampuan buat masa sekarang pun adakah orang sekeliling kau mampu macam kau?

Yup aku mengundi baru ni. Band mate aku tak tahu lah mengundi ke tak aku pun tak tanya. Kitorang lebih kepada dalam group whatsapp “oi pantek bila nak jamming sial”, “ada orang ajak main tarikh ni korang on ke tak?” dan “wey ada lagu baru jom jamming lah cb”. Then kalau jumpa untuk jamming dan show baru kitorang lepon berjalan makan sekali. Kitorang semua dah over 30 (aku paling muda kamon guys) dan kebanyakan dah ada bini anak bagai (aku single lah kamon guys) it’s obviously not like the old times. Bak kata mat saleh celup let the good times roll.

Ijat: We have yet to see any movement currently as they just appointed a new PM yesterday, however 6 months down the road if there is no changes or non of the promises has been initiated then we will start to voice up/ criticize. * who cares if we vote or not? The people has chooses their leader.. get him to do the job as we are all the boss of the politician.

Besides being easier for locals to understand, are there any more reasons why you choose to sing in Malay language?

Keyroll_Spanky: No other reason. Maybe banyak band acah nak speaking jadi kami hanya nak berbahasa. Lagi pun maki dalam Bahasa lebih makan dalam dan difahami banding sekadar ‘fuck you’. Apa lagi aku nak jawab untuk soalan ni? Tak ada kot.

Ijat: No other reason, We are just comfortable with the way we composed the songs.


Merdekakah Kita is one of your songs. What do you think about freedom, your definition? What kind of freedom, from your point of view, is perfect?

Keyroll_Spanky: Freedom. Merdeka. Tidak dijajah. Tapi bagi aku kita ni sentiasa dijajah. Tapi dalam minda. Nak ikut cara barat lah cara negara padang pasir lah cara kau salah cara aku betul. Dengan zaman social media ni banyak nak ikut dan kejar trend semasa. Belum campur dengan yang dalam negara sendiri bila politikus dan orang berpangkat cakap sesuatu kau telan bulat bulat tanpa soal siasat. Dan mereka of course tetap dalam kesenangan manakala yang mengikut menjilat tak kaya senang macam dorang pun. Kau tak rasa macam dijajah? Ke aku je rasa? Entoh ler. Dan untuk aku acah freedom yang perfect adalah bebas hutang. Rumah kau besar mana pun kereta apa pun makan kedai apa pun nak tunjuk betapa T20 nya kau walaupun ada je yang B40 acah T20 tapi bro, apa guna berhutang? Nak jaga lifestyle kau punya pasal sampai tipu member sendiri. Belum cerita yang penagih lagi. Kenal daut zainal tak? Itu salah 1 lahanat budak scene yang lari dari hutang. Kita tengok berapa lama dia boleh lari mamat keturunan pengecut tu. Lelz

Ijat: We live in same world we shared the same air.. why would people being restricted to do what they like?


Unity, do you believe in unity? Do you personally think people will or can unite for the sake of harmony and peace or they only unite under the name of money?

Keyroll_Spanky: Kalau nak cerita pasal unity korang boleh nampak kot dorang di atas tu buat gabungan untuk majoriti. Itu pun category unity. Walaupun untuk kepentingan masing masing. Lelz. Netizen bergaduh itu ini tapi bila pasal makanan dari negara mana automatically netizen Malaysia semua bergabung. Unity juga tu. Goku dan Vegeta bergabung nak kalahkan certain villain. Unity tu. Dan pendapat aku. Yes kita boleh bersatu, hanya bila masalah berlaku. Kalau bersatu untuk duit, dan dia juga hanya untuk sementara. Sebab tengah ada kepentingan. Bila duit habis kembalilah berpecah.

Ijat: The people are united in fact we are living in harmony.. politician are the one who divided and toxicate-ing for the sake of money.


About racism, how do you see this issue? From your point of view, why does this racism issue become rampant day by day?

Keyroll_Spanky: Perkauman benda yang takkan habis. Tak kisah kau dilahirkan sebagai kaum apa nanti ada lah manusia parasit yang sama kaum dengan kau akan cucuk kau dari belakang pasal perkauman. Antara saja cucuk atau untuk kepentingan dia, dengan cara halus atau cara terbuka bila ‘back up’ dia dah ramai (sebab tu dah berani). Ala macam lah korang tak tahu permainan ni. Politikus pun akan main benda ni juga. Kat area sini dia cakap lain kat area sana dia cakap lain. Untuk aku sendiri susah nak termakan benda racism ni. INTERVIEW WITH THE ELECTRIC APE IN STEREO

I've heard that the first pressing of ‘Before The World Turn Dark’ is already sold -out, congratulations! Any plan to repress? Maybe with extra candy/track on it? And why this time you decided to press CD not tape as ‘We Come In Peace’?

- First of all we would like to express our sincere appreciation to " Rice Factory Zine " for this interview session. Alhamdulilah and thank you very much for the wish. Yes we have decided to make another 150 limited copies of our second press cd for our upcoming launching show that will be held this 24 December at Ladyboss studio, Ipoh and In Shaa Allah we will bring the cd aslo for our south and north tour next year ( Caution : We only sell the cd at our show ya so keep updated hehe 😁✌️ ). 

At the moment we only press cd format for the release because of pandemic factor, we really struggling with our financial during recording the album maybe in future we try our best to press the album in tape format or maybe vinyl who knows, In Shaa Allah wish us luck hehe.

TEAIS = TEH AIS? Beside as a platform to express your musical ability, what is TEAIS for you?

- TEAIS is a shortform for The Electric Ape In Stereo. Beside music itself, TEAIS is more about friendship.It bring us together and we hope we will always be together as a band and friends.


How do you guys meet with Steve Corrao? And what factors lead TEAIS to work with him? Is he expensive?

- Our album was recorded at the studio called " Smelly Wreck Chords " and the sound engineer there is our friend, his the one who introduce us to Steve Corrao. What makes us want to work with him it's because Steve Corrao can produce an analogue mastering with acceptable price and we really love the end result that make by him.

Based in Indie Rock City, did you find Ipoh's uniqueness, especially its people and environment, affected in TEAIS song writing?

- Yes, Ipoh is our hometown and we really love to live here. For us Ipoh is the cultural hub that always give us ideas and inspired our song writing. Besides the chillness of the surrounding, this ghost town really gives us the vibe of " Cold Dark Wave " emotional.

INTERVIEW WITH IBLISS

 1- After Bintang Fajar, is there any follow up single in the making? Is that true you guys working on new album? Can share the details? For which label, how many songs, date to release etc?
Yes, we're in the middle of recording. Another few songs to go until it's complete. It will be released by Regain Records, a label from Sweden. We plan to have 6-7 songs, but let's see how. Perhaps somewhere early next year.

2- Demonic, Her is getting few editions of pressing right? Do you keep track of all of that edition? Can you list us the complete edition of that album, label involve, color, shape, test press and how many copies for each pressing? The Argentina tape release is having a missing bonus track, is that true? The defected tape become sought after item for the collector?
Honestly we don't really remember haha. But the labels that released the album was DHU Records from The Netherlands & Forbidden Place Records from US. Yeah the factory in Argentina didn't include the bonus track. Technical issues maybe that time. But Ruidoteka Records were so responsible to reprint it back and send us our copies. Whether the missing bonus track is a sought after item or not, we are not too sure. If yes, good luck to those who are looking haha.

3- It seems that you guys is getting a lot of international attention. From which country most of your supporter or fan coming from? I mean beside of Malaysia, of course. Got any good offer from label outside Malaysia? Any weird fan mail ever received?
We didn't really expect that actually. From which country we have the most fans, we can't really tell. But they are from Mexico, Argentina, Poland, Italy, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Slovakia,  Sweden, Serbia, USA, just to name a few. Regain Records from Sweden will release our ep & second album. So that's a really good offer to us. Weird fans? Haha so far there's none but it would be interesting to have some hahaha.

4- You have been playing numerous gig here locally, any plan to tour outside of Malaysia? Your wish, in which festival do you want Ibliss to headline?
Of course it's our dream to tour abroad. If there's offer and sponsor, why not? We  don't really think about being a headliner, because for us, even if it's just a small gig in a record store will do.

5- Last question, will (((Unholy))) EP remain as bandcamp exclusive or the track will be used on the next album?
Let that be a surprise for everyone 🤘

INTERVIEW WITH SILENT DEATH

Morbid Massacre had just released, please let us know where it was recorded and who engineered it?  Can you let us know the Silent Death full line up for this release?

Morbid Massacre was recorded at Neo Gendang Blackroom Studio somewhere in October 2022 and was engineered by Hadi Pranoto. There is no new full line up for this release, Zizi Hashim is the only line up on vox/growls. All instruments was played by a Sessionists. The reason being is to avoid any future claims, future headaches, bla bla bla 😅


SHM is the label responsible to release this CD, any special deal with the them? How many copies pressed? And why rerecorded the old songs? Why not the 100% new songs?

No special deals with SHM, just normal royalty procedure claim like the other label has approached before. CD limited 300pcs only.

No new songs because the intention is to re-promote old songs for new generation of Silent Death's fan. For most of old-timers memang la kenal Silent Death tu sape kan, tapi utk BBNU ramai yg belum tau lagi banyak lagu-lagu Silent Death yg best-best especially yg dlm EP Break The Silence ni.

Ramai tau Before The Sunrise je, so kami (label and myself) decided untuk promote lagu-lagu dalam EP Break The Silence pulak.

I was thinking "why not?" dan yang otai-otai memang tau pasal Silent Death ni semua dah umur masuk 50-an more or less, yang generasi baru ni yg kita nak target pulak skrg supaya Silent Death tak mati senyap.


What the fan of Silent Death can expect from this new recording? Share with us your experience as the vocalist for this release.

What the fan of Silent Death can expect from this new recording?
The new release is a return to the past for Silent Death in several key respects. The results speak for themselves. I have maintain my role as the Band Manager for more than a decade now, and has already build a big impact in the metal music community, no matter whether it's controversial or not 😅🙏🏻.
 
I believes i have create this kind of frenzy among a significant amount of Silent Death fans, I mean tiba-tiba Silent Death muncul balik vokal perempuan? Gila tak gila? Ada mirip-mirip suara Stone tapi vokal perempuan,  itu lah yg boleh Silent Death fans expect kelainan pada rilisan kali ni.  

The fact that i have broke this release pattern and suddenly announced a new album after so long, created a lot of initial buzz around “Morbid Massacre”. But in several other respects, I set a new standard by re-embracing the past on some of Stone past best practices/growls.

My experience as the vocalist for this release...
I love Silent Death so much that it has become my sweats and blood for more than a decades, I loved all the albums, all the songs and... its pretty surreal still to this day that I got the chance to re-record my vocals after Stone. Mula-mula mmg rasa mcm "eh betul ke apa yg aku buat ni?" takut-takut pun ada tapi lebih kepada teruja... excited... thrilled... that is life I never know what it has in store for me.

Bukan niat saya nak menggantikan Stone, tiada sape dpt menggantikan kehebatan Stone, jauh sekali saya.... but I was always very driven to turn my dreams into reality. I fought hard for everything I got. And I kept that spirit until today... alhamdulillah saya rasa sgt gembira bila ada komen2 yg kata growls/voxs saya 85% mirip arwah Stone...

Personally, it is very rewarding, walaupun I had a very hard at times being the vox and at the same time becomes manager for the band. Benda-benda orang cakap-cakap saya tu semua saya dah expect tapi saya buat jugak sebab saya rasa apa yg saya buat ni betul. Kalau bukan saya yang buat, siapa yang akan buat? Cuba bagitau. Sementara saya boleh growl ni, nanti dah tua takleh growl dah takde kenangan pulak kan. Saya rekod la jugak buat kenangan hari tua nanti.

Ada yang nak cakap-cakap saya biarkan lah je dorg bercakap saya malas layan 😅 let them talk. Selama saya jaga Silent Death semasa hayat arwah Stone, saya tak pernah tau saya bole growl. Antara sebab saya tak pernah growl sama-sama dengan dia. Saya cuma tau bila arwah start sakit stroke, saya terpaksa jadi bidan terjun ganti dia masa show kat Kota Kinabalu. Masa tu awal thn 2012. Stone yg tgk balik rakaman video saya nyanyi tu dia pun terkejut. Dia tenung muka saya lama (masa tu dia tak bole bercakap), saya cuma angkat bahu je 🤷🏻‍♀️ sebab saya pun tak tahu saya boleh growl.

Anak saya Fenriz siap ckp "mama pinjam suara uncle Stone sebab tu uncle Stone tak boleh cakap". Stone angguk-angguk setuju dengan cakap Fenriz. something yg saya tak pernah terfikir, tak pernah mimpi pun nak buat selama ni...

Any show/gig to support this new release? Any follow up project after Morbid Massacre from Silent Death camp?

Pasal gig ni subjektif sikit. Kalau ada yang invite to perform, then saya kena rekrut sessionist utk back-up on stage. Setakat ni memang takde line-up lain. Saya memang nak elakkan sakit kepala orang cakap itu ini itu tak boleh ini tak boleh, saya bukan anak patung ayahhh 🤣🤣🤣 hahaha sori sori wat lawak lak... 🙏🏻

Maksudnya kalau ada yang ajak perform, timing ngam, deal ok, why not kan? Follow up project, kita tengok yang album ni macamana penerimaan dulu. Kalau sambutan OK dan memberansangkan, kita proceed next project/release in shaa Allah.


As the one who taking care of Silent Death’s right, what are the criteria that you take into consideration before you give a green light to any party that want to release anything using Silent Death moniker?

I'm a very simple person, you come to me elok-elok bincang, senang je kita deal. Takde banyak songeh kriteria sangat. Kena cara, kena dengan harga, dapat agih-agih sorang sket untuk waris-waris dan line up yang ada, bole ON dah.

Sebab bukan banyak pun, bukan release 300,000 copies pun kan. Bukan boleh kaya pun, cuma yang penting yang hak kembali kepada yg berhak, tu je.

Orang takleh buat sukahati macam sebelum saya jaga Silent Death masa Stone hilang lama dulu. Sekarang lebih teratur dan di landasan yg betul.

INTERVIEW WITH MODAR

After Badhtra Srodja, is there any plan for a follow up album? Please share with us what is in the Modar’s pipeline? In August, Nero Corvino posted that they will collab with Modar, what is the deal all about?

MODAR: So far we don't have any plan for new album or any recording yet. If we don't have any gig invitation, we just keep practicing the same set lists for gig, which at least happen twice per year. Yes,we did collab with Nero Corvino, but for a small deal only. They will promote our album in digital format under their label. Fan can buy that digital format through their page or Modar page.

After four albums and more than three decades in the scene, how do you see the progress of the band and do you think Modar has already matured enough musically?  What happened to the Cosmic Dream?

MODAR: Actually we are not a very active band. We seldom perform live and release the album.This is because we are very busy with our own commitment plus we are very seldom to have time to meet each other. One more thing,our musical style also not for gig or concert friendly. So far we still OK with our achievement and still proud with our identity because we don't have any specific target since we are not active and happening band.

About Badhtra Srodja digipack released early this year, the CD was pressed in Taiwan right? Is it cheaper to replicate in Taiwan? Is this record label (Gedebe) decision to press there?

MODAR: Yes, for Badhtra Srodja Digipack version it was pressed in Taiwan. It might be because the price more cheaper and comes with good quality product as well. All decision are made by Gedebe Rekord  regarding how many units to press and in which format to release. Since they bear all the cost. Our job only did the recording and design the cover artwork.


Bunyian Tepi Hutan 3 I guess is the most recent gig by Modar. What is the criteria that you take into consideration before you want to say ok to any gig offer? If you have to choose, do you prefer performing live/gig or sitting in the studio and doing the recording?

MODAR: Yes, BTH III was our latest gig. Actually we accept the invitation which has been offered with early notice, at least 3 or 4 months before the date of the gig. This because we need to arrange time to get off-day permission from company where we are working. One more thing, if the gig venue outside of KL, we might be asking for some token to cover the transport cost and place to stay. We are not asking for big and specific amount, only some consideration from organizer which can bring a win-win situation for both parties.


Do you still remember how much you paid to Hellion Studio in 1992 to record your demo back then? Any good memories to share during that demo recording?

MODAR: Sorry, totally forgot how much that recording costed us. It happened long time ago. But good memory is, it becomes the longest running time demo ever released in local scene. Unfortunately we didn't spread it into the scene since we are not really satisfied with the recording result (sound). We just keep the master copy for ourselves.

MODAR: Thank you also for this interview. Hmm what we just hope is that Modar will alive and kicking forever in our scene. Sidd: I started connecting with Bones through Myspace until now via Facebook. Previously we’re more chatted about music.. and now we’re more talked about our family and life journey experience.

Seems like you guys start actively rehearsing now, will there be any new release that we can expect? Full album? Ep? Split? Comp? Or merchandise?

Sidd: Next:Compilation with Indonesian label.

Beside Malaysia (of coz), DISM has been destroying stages in Thailand and Indonesia. Is there any plan to go for any gig in Japan, perhaps? And maybe Europe? Any memorable gig outside Malaysia that you want to tell us about?

Sidd: If we got invited, sure we will go there.

INTERVIEW WITH MASS SEPARATION

Besides promoting Semarak Api Ep, any other releases that Mass Separation is working on at this moment?
MS: Not yet! But we are toying with this idea of having a split EP with Compulsion To Kill. Hopefully they would like to do it, that would be be a cool one! Hehe.

 

A side of the EP was recorded at BSYNC Studio early this year, please let us know some details on the recording process like how many hours you guys spent, recorded live or track-by-track, effects used during the recording (if any) etc..
MS: It took us around 6 to 8 hours including the mixing and mastering. Yup, we did it track by track and Tom used Pro Tools to record us. We had physical effects on guitars and bass but none on drums and vocals. But we did tried some plug-ins to make our sounds more raw. 

Semarak Api 7” vinyl released by Bollocks Rec and CD by Black Conflict right? Is there any plan to release tape? Personally, what do you think on tape? Still relevant as a medium to spread the music now? What is your take on spreading music for free online?
MS:We are so glad that we got Bollocks Recs and Black Konflik releasing the EP! Both are cool DIY punk labels with wide local and international distribution. Actually we are cool with any formats be it vynils, cds, tapes and even online. Because we rather see our music spreading like a plague than sitting in a cult box. Personally I used to buy and trade a lot tapes but its not that cheap anymore.  And now I only buy music that I like. So yeah, promoting your music online is the way getting people to hear you.
I believe people will look out for your stuffs if they like it.

 
After the successful Riang Ria DIY, any other date that Mass Separation will blast the stage? Any gigs outside Kuala Lumpur?
MS: We would thanks to our friends at Rumah Api. And of course to all the other bands, artist and everyone that showed up to the Riang Ria DIY 2022! We really enjoyed it and we hope you guys had a good time too! As much we wanted to play more shows but unfortunately we are unable to play too many due to many other commitments. But we are looking at the possibilities of playing shows in Kuching or Kota Kinabalu and a split release with cool bands coming from Borneo!

Seems like you guys are hibernating from 2016-2021. What happened to Mass Separation between that time? Thank you for your time, all the best to Mass Separation.
MS: We actually had a show in Ipoh together with Rajasinga and Demisor back in 2016. But it was only 3 of us that time without bass and 2nd vocals. Niesa, our vocalist had a heart complications (PPCM) due to her pregnancy in early 2017 and we took this long break. No worries, we are still around. Hanging out at shows and playing in our other bands. Thanks to you too and more power to the Rice Factory zine!

INTERVIEW WITH HIP HOP DECONTROL

Hi, I’m new to HipHop Decontrol, please introduce yourself and HipHop Decontrol in general. Year of formation, current/previous line up and if possible HipHop Decontrol current setup as well, what decks you/DJ are spinning, mixer, synth etc etc..

Addy: Word up! I’m Addy Ruff, as MC and lyricist. My weapon is pen and paper.

Manic E: Hi. I’m E, the beatmaker. HHD is me, Addy Ruff and DJ Killah Z and always be. It started back in 2021 when I first approached Killah Z, expressing my interest on doing a hiphop project, specifically a political hiphop project. He bought it and of course we gotta’ get an MC. So he asked me to check on Addy’s stuff and I really like ‘em. We approached Addy not long after. He likes the idea and we like him too!

For the last recordings, I used lotsa’ MicroKorg XL, a MIJ vintage upright piano and Casio CTK520L for keys, Roland SP-404SX and Akai MPK Mini for sampling and drums and Gibson SG guitar, Fender Jazz Bass and Kramer 450B Bass for strings.

And for live show, I just need my mac. Haha!

Killah Z: Holla Holla ,Hi , Im, DJ Killah Z, and I’m doing all cutz  for HHD. Before Manic E approach me, I also was thinking that our HC/Punk scene needs a hip hop group to celebrate the different. I still remember last 3 years I think, when Krowbar tour, there was no opening from any of us here. Damn!! We need ones!!  I’m really glad when Manic E offered me to his project and yeah…it begins here.

About your upcoming 7” 'Ini Gurindam Sial, Bahasa Menyangkal', may I know where it was recorded? Who engineered, mixed and mastered it? This 7” consist of how many tracks? All of them are new recordings or previously released? How many pieces will the Resolve Record press?

Addy: 4 tracks. Recorded at Manic E’s crimelab haha. Most of the ideas came up by our own.

Manic E: The EP features 4 new songs. All of them were recorded at my place except Lawan Kuasa’s vocals that was recorded at Kuzai (THE BOLLOCKS)’s place in Ampang.  The tracks were then mastered by Jay (HOMICIDE, EYEFEELSIX etc.) who based in Bandung, ID.

Thanks to MostHatedByAll and Resolve Records for releasing the EP. There’ll be 200 copies available through them and perhaps other local labels too.

Killah Z:As per mentioned by Manic E, the EP , we recorded at Manic E at his Home Studio and its contains 4 track. It will release by MostHatedBy All Records that’s run by me and Yarobin  together with Resolve records Sungai Petani !! Hello Amet and the crewz!!

We release 200 copies .

All songs was written by us and the mix and mastered by JayDawn . (KLxBandung koneksyen yeaahhh!!!)
 

What do you mean by 'Ini Gurindam Sial, Bahasa Menyangkal'?

Addy: As mentioned “Gurindam” there is the proper speech. So when it comes to “Gurindam Sial” is the “Fuckin’ Speech” we pull out our thoughts about what happen in the real world and the man behind the “chess game” who exactly runnin’ the world. The political, cops brutality, oppression and corruption.  “Bahasa Menyangkal” means we fight back through the lyrical.

Manic E: ‘Ini Gurindam Sial, Bahasa Menyangkal’ represents the tracks that we created, we played, we produced in it.

Firstly, none of us are in the gang, so we don’t sing about gangs lah. We sing about political and social injustice instead.

Also, I grew up listening to mostly punks and hardcore and not so much of hiphop. Whatever beats that I created or sampled, they may sound untraditional to some beatmaker purists.

Killah Z:It’s tell you about the message that’s we spread with the beat that will kill !!

 

Talking about the gig, how frequent is HipHop Decontrol playing live? To date, your last gig is at Basement Show? Any memorable moments during your 2022 Northern Tour recently? And why north?

Addy: A lot of a gigs we performed but by these 2 months(october & november) we ain’t perform any gigs yet. We focus on our EP to released. Lil bit busy we making that happen for real. And for sure there’s memorable moments because we thought we don’t have listeners especially boombap. We reppin’ classic Hip Hop sound and yes we have listeners. Plus we got sponsored by Playaz during the Sungai Petani gig. Shout out to Playaz. During the Penang show organised by Komal(shout out to Abang Komal🤘🏻), it was very memorable show because you know what, you got no idea punk kids breakdancing while we performing hahaha🤣 I think performing Hip Hop in Punk gigs is more Hip Hop than Hip Hop haha…get what I mean 🤣

Manic E: We did a couple of shows before. That Basement Show was one of the best!

I wasn’t around during northern tour but I’m sure it was a good one, judging on the videos and photos they took during the tour. Haha!

Yes, we’re planning for another tour. We’ll announce it soon.

Killah Z:Our First gig is on 12th March 2022at Bora Bora Kitchen bar together with Aqu and Addy Khayal (Shout out to Dak. Kool), MVL/PH1/Yang Arif (Hello Blanco people!!)

The North tour started when Akmal Komal invite us to play at Penang on 28th May 2022, due to that we think why not we do the North tour straight away from 27-29 May 2022.And yeahh , we bring along our brother YAROBIN along !! Love Yarobin !!! We started from Sungai Petani (thanks Amet and Crewz) –Penang (Thanks Akmal Komal and crewz) and last ipoh (Thanks Raja Azrul and crewz.)

INTERVIEW WITH EXTREME DECAY

 

Hi, how’s Malang Indonesia right now? And please update us any news on Extreme Decay camp up till today? I mean any new deal of split, new album, merch etc…

Hi Mack! It's Ravi here, we're doing great, how's yours? We are busy with our own daily activities. The Malang scene's been getting more intense recently, after passed the pandemic circumstances several months ago.

These years' also our busiest time in ExD. We have recorded our materials between June and Sept. 2021, and right after that the ANTIVIRAL EP cassette came out via Disaster Records. Then we signed with Samstrong Records to re-released the EP in 7" format, along with 2 bonus tracks and also remastered audio.

We also have few unreleased materials that was supposed to be planned for a split project with Busuk this year, but unfortunately we have to postponed that. Hopefully we can make it happen in near future.

On April '22 we finally released our 4th full length entitled "DOWNFALL OF A GOD COMPLEX" via SelfMadeGod Records Poland. It was also available on cassette format, released by Grieve Records Jakarta. By the way this album will also be released limitedly in Malaysia by GoatLordth Records, hopefully will come out by November '22.

Lastly we also had just celebrated the 20th grindversary of our 2002 album entitled "SAMPAH DUNIA KETIGA" on Sept. '22 by doing a special reissue in 12" vinyl format, co-released by 3 labels: Disaster Records, Snakecharm Records and Samstrong Records. The reissue was came out with new cover artwork and also has special bonus items on it.

Almost forgot.. we've also been waiting for the DOWNFALL OF A GOD COMPLEX 12" version. it'll be co-released by 10 labels from Europe and South America. We really hope this vinyl will also come out by end of this year, so it made this 'year of the grind' completed :)


Besides of promoting new album Downfall Of A God Complex, any tour/gig to support the album release? And the deal with SelfMadeGod, how it come up?

Oh yeah, we've been doing few promo tour / gigs, started on July '22 in our town. We were helped by our fellow local organizer in which had done small but exuberant showcase/release party. Since I now living in Sumatera Island, and the other member are also busy with their workdays and family lives, we can only do few shows in weekend. The first leg was done in East Java, and then we did Bali chapter on August '22. In the next October there will be 4 shows across Central and West Java.

Regarding the record deals, we sent our promo sampler by email to as many as underground records we know. Fortunately Karol of SelfMadeGod was one of the first to came up and replied our email. He's just an easy guy, I mean no nonsense / straight to the point, definitely grindcore approach :)


How many hours did you spent in the studio for the recording of Downfall Of A God Complex? Is there any unreleased track / b-side from that session?

We spent almost 3 days and 4 nights, 10 shifts (4 hours per shift) in rush to record the materials. There should be 30 songs but we'd only able to record just 23 tracks. There's one song that will only be available in vinyl format as a bonus track.

How actually the cover artwork relates to the album title? Tell us more about the cover work.

The album cover was done nicely by our friend @riokrisma from @Penahitam.Arts collective. They are one of most active and productive art movement in our town. The artwork was painted with acrylic on canvas.

The idea was to have a totem-shaped made from human body in a post-apocalypse world - kind of illustration - to portray a state of contriteness, feeling remorse of human beings for the things that they have done.

Human being act as if they are the center of this universe and they hold their own unshakable belief and privileges (god complex). All they have done is just for benefits of their species in the name of developmentalism and civilization, without considering other existence and the balance of nature. So they will face an irrefutable truth towards world downfall and in the end they beg for absolution/forgiveness from divine power they put their faith upon. But that is useless..


To be honest, your first album Progressive Destruction is my all-time favourite. How do you hook up with Extremist Records for the album deal? Yes I know it was way back in 1999-2000, but if you still remember, please tell us the story.

Oh yeah, we remember that too! Back in the '99 when Buddy Drogheda/Extremist Records contacted us. He knew about us from one of International comps we joined. Then he offered us to release 1000 copies of Progressive Desctruction in CD format. He's a nice guy :)


Holocaust Resistance released in 2010, and the latest album in 2022. Why took so long time for the follow up album? All the best to Extreme Decay, Thank You !

A lot happened during that time. In the middle of the Holocaust Resistence recording session back in the 2008, I moved away to Pekanbaru, Sumatera Island to worked and started a family life. Then Sahery from Perish joined and re-recorded most of guitar recording i have done for Holocaust Resistence. Rulli joined not long after that (as second guitarist) and then Sahery left, back with 4 pieces. Around 2016/2017 Yuda the bassist left and Anizar from Mutant Trooper filled the position. For some time there was no new materials until right before the pandemic started (end of 2019) that I decided to joined back and provoked the other member to start collecting new materials. Afril also decided to changed his position, not as the vocalist anymore but still continue to handle the band's management, so now the vocal dept. are handled by 3 of us: me, Rulli and Nizar. Now the line-up are: Ravi (guitar & voc), Rulli (guitar & voc), Nizar (bass & voc) and Eko (drums).
